Cleaning a Granite Headstone
The complete grave site is inspected for cracks and broken or damaged concrete.
Headstone cleaning consists of a specialised cleaning chemical which is applied to the headstone and with gentle water pressure the headstone and complete site are cleaned of all moss, lichen and dirt. This process completely removes any old paint in the lettering and the headstone is left to dry.
As with any painting job the preparation is the most important part.

At this stage any concrete or plastering work is undertaken and left to set.
If painting of the grave site is required then this is completed at this point.
When the headstone cleaning is finished a long term moss killer (Wet & Forget) is applied to the headstone and the complete grave site.
This will prevent the moss roots from attaching to the headstone for a few years and then further applications are recommended every 2 to 5 years to prevent this happening.

These older White Marble headstones usually have lead lettering tapped into the lettering grooves and if the lead is still there it is possible to tap the lead back into the headstone before headstone cleaning commences.

It usually takes around 20 days for the marble to become pure white again as it takes time for all the (now dead) moss roots embedded in the stone to "weather out".
